How to Succeed in an MSK Physiotherapy Interview: Tips and Strategies
Thanks for reading the 11th edition of my newsletter. This newsletter tracks my work to create the best available resource for newly qualified physiotherapists interested in MSK.
If you're gearing up for a physiotherapy interview, particularly for an MSK role, you're in the right place. I’ve gathered invaluable insights from interview panels I've worked with to help you ace your interview and land that coveted role. Let’s dive in!
1. Clarify the Question
Tip: Ensure you fully understand what the interviewers are asking, especially when it comes to technical terms. If you're unsure, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification.
Why it Matters: Providing a relevant and accurate answer is far better than stumbling through a misunderstood question. Asking for repetition or writing down the question can also help you stay focused and precise in your responses.
2. Utilize the STAR Method
Tip: Structure your answers using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) when discussing your experiences and skills.
Why it Matters: This method helps you present your responses clearly and concisely, ensuring you cover all aspects of the question without losing your train of thought.
3. Review and Reflect
Tip: After your interview, take some time to reflect on the questions asked and how you responded. This reflection process is crucial for continuous improvement.
Why it Matters: Learning from each interview helps you refine your skills and approach. While it's not standard for employers to offer feedback if you’re not shortlisted, those who do offer feedback can provide valuable insights. Don’t hesitate to request it, and if needed, make a freedom of information request for interview notes.
4. Ask Thoughtful Questions
Tip: Use the end of the interview to ask insightful questions that show your interest and enthusiasm for the role. Here are some examples:
What do you think are some of the biggest challenges in this job/role at the moment?
Where do you think the trust is headed in the next 5 years?
What are the biggest opportunities/challenges facing the company/department right now?
What is the typical career path for someone in this role?
What do you like best about working for this company?
Are there any further details I can provide that will be helpful?
Why it Matters: Asking questions not only leaves a positive impression but also gives you a better understanding of the role and the organisation.
5. Other Miscellaneous Tips for Success
Tip: Remember, you're not expected to answer every question perfectly. Interviewing is a skill that requires practice.
Why it Matters: Don’t be discouraged if you don't get a spot on your first try. Keep practising, and remember that even if you don't know something, it’s okay to admit it.
Tip: Keep talking!
Why it Matters: The interviewers won't stop you from talking. The more you talk, the higher the chance you hit their criteria. They may prompt you with further questions to guide you towards the answers they're looking for.
Tip: Be prepared for varied questioning styles.
Why it Matters: Not all questions will be straightforward. Practice thinking on your feet and applying your knowledge to different situations.
